Spiced pumpkin “gelatte”: At first blush, the combination of a warm latte and cold gelato may not sound terribly appealing, but Paciugo Gelato Caffe has created a surprisingly delicious mashup that mixes frothed milk, potent espresso and sweet, creamy pumpkin gelato that’s made in-house. The result is a silky, luxurious blend, with subtle flavors of pumpkin and a bit of cinnamon that perfectly blend with the coffee but don’t overpower it. The $3.59 drink easily bests Starbucks’ Pumpkin Spice Latte, which can have a cloying aftertaste. The gelatte is also available in apple-caramel flavor. Through Nov. 27. Three Chicago locations: 2009 W. Roscoe St., 773-661-9519; 3241 N. Broadway St., 773-248-8433; 2324 W. Giddings St., 773-989-1926.

Seasonal trend: Pumpkin spice coffee
Since Starbucks introduced its Pumpkin Spice Latte a decade ago, coffee drinks flavored not necessarily with pumpkin itself but with spices found in pumpkin pie — including cinnamon, nutmeg, clove and sometimes ginger, allspice or star anise — have proliferated on autumn menus.
Online restaurant ordering company GrubHub reports that orders for menu items with the word “pumpkin” in them jump by 33 percent in October and November. Menu research firm Datassential says that virtually all pumpkin limited-time offers appear in the fall, with the remainder introduced in August in anticipation of the seasonal frenzy.

The following is an excerpt from PegasusNews.com announcing Paciugo’s new Fall seasonal flavors.
DALLAS — Dallas-based gelato company Paciugo is harvesting two new seasonal flavors, Apple Caramel and Spiced Pumpkin. Both are available in gelato form, or in a coffee called a gelatte.
More on that gelatte: They steam any milk-based flavor of gelato in a frothing pitcher, then mix it with shots of espresso to make flavored coffee. Paciugo does not use syrups for its coffees, said John Kelly, director of marketing at Paciugo.
